Babywearing is the practice of carrying a baby in a carrier close to our body as we go about our daily business. We feel, it is parenting's best kept secret. Good things happen when we wear our babies. Babies who are worn cry less, are more calm and content, sleep more peacefully, nurse better, gain weight better, enjoy better digestion and develop better. Most importantly, it allows you to meet your baby's need to be held while allowing you to meet your need to get things done!
When it’s time for you to choose a baby carrier one of the first things you’ll need to decide is which type of carrier will best suit your lifestyle and daily babywearing needs. In today’s market, there are multiple baby carrier types to choose from and each type is designed to meet a different set of needs. Here is a breakdown of the most common baby carrier types below.
Pouch Slings:
Pouch slings are simple, one piece slings that are sized to the wearer. Pouch slings are wonderful for carrying newborn babies and are one of the easiest to learn how to use. Pouch slings can also be used as hip carriers as the baby grows. Because these are sized to the wearer, they can generally only be used by one parent.
Wraps:
A wrap style carrier consists of a long piece of fabric that is
wrapped around the wearer’s body and shoulders to create a pocket for
baby to sit in. The simple design of a wrap carrier provides you with
the versatility to reconfigure it into a wide variety of carry
positions including a cradle sling carry.
Ring Slings:
Ring Slings are a piece of fabric with 2 rings (usually either nylon or metal) attached to one end. The fabric is threaded through the rings to make a pouch part for the baby and a tail which can be adjusted. More versatile than a pouch as it can be used by different sized wearers and the generous amount of fabric in the tail allows you to nurse your little one discreetly when they are in the sling.
Mei Tai Carriers:
A Mei Tai is an Asian-style baby carrier that features the basic
design of a rectangle of fabric and four straps (two waist straps and
two shoulder straps). This style of carrier distributes the child’s
weight evenly across your body. Mei Tai carriers do not feature
any buckles, zippers, snaps or rings.
Soft Structured Carriers:
When worn in a soft structured carrier (SSC), a baby can be worn on the chest facing towards the caregiver or facing outward, on the back or on the caregiver’s hip. SSC's are usually made of firm fabrics, have padding and have straps that are worn over both of the wearer’s shoulders. While some parents will choose one carrier that meets all of their needs, others may find that their needs are so varied that they require two or more carriers to accommodate all babywearing activities. You will find that Samantha fits into the latter category!
